DUPLICATION OR REPLICATION? What is the main difference between duplication and replication?

The difference between CD replication and CD duplication is that replication is a professional process that creates a CD by molding the disk to be an exact copy of the original master. Data cannot be added or changed using this method. Duplication is the burning of data to a disk, a recordable disc, using a computer drive or duplication towers.

The duplication process is quick and efficient but tends to be more cost effective when burning less than 500 units of any particular CD or DVD.

The replication method is better if you have mastered a CD or DVD and would like to make 500 copies or more. Replicated CD and DVD discs will be cheaper over a higher volume and will ensure a durable, reliable copy of the highest standard.

Factories who offer replication can also print and pack the DVD or CD, producing a professional fully finished product

In CD replication or DVD replication, also know as pressing, your original master is used to make a glass master which in turn allows a set of stampers to be made. High-tech injection-molding makes exact clones of the master, using the stampers. A coat of reflective aluminium follows, sealed with a protective coat of lacquer hardened by ultraviolet light. Every CD is made in this fashion, essentially an original replica. From here the disks can be printed using offset or silk screen disc printing machines.

In summary, for small runs under 500 pcs then DVD or CD replication would make sense. However, for volume requirements in excess of 500 unit, then CD or DVD replication would be the suggested route.
